A Historic Occasion

This service marked a historic moment, as Camilla became the first royal consort to distribute the Maundy money during the ceremony. The Queen arrived at the cathedral in a stylish cream coat dress and her signature hat. She proceeded with the ceremony despite facing protests from a group called Republic, which opposed the monarchy.

Protests Greet the Queen

The protestors voiced their disapproval with placards and chants, but Camilla maintained her composure and continued with her duties.

King Charles Delivers a Message of Friendship

In a pre-recorded message broadcast during the service, King Charles spoke about the importance of friendship, especially during challenging times. Many interpreted this message as a reference to his health battle and the recent cancer diagnosis of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.

About the Royal Maundy Service

The Royal Maundy service is a longstanding tradition commemorating Jesus’ Last Supper and his act of humility in washing the feet of his disciples. During the service, specially minted Maundy money is distributed to recipients chosen for their community service.

What is Maundy Money?

Traditionally, sovereigns would wash the feet of the needy as part of the ceremony. Today, this practice is no longer followed. Instead, 75 men and 75 women—signifying the king’s age—receive two purses, one red and one white, filled with maundy money.

  • The red purse contains a small amount of regular coins totaling £5.50, representing symbolic gifts of clothing, food, and money.
  • The white purse contains 75 pence in silver Maundy coins, equal to the number of years the sovereign has lived.
